Since I didn't have time to go into detail about its problems while live-tweeting
JAST's Flowers demo, I thought I'd collect everything together and explain some of the actual translation errors for people who don't speak Japanese.
Most of the translations I give for the lines will be fairly rough, but they should suffice to illustrate the errors.
取り返しが付かなくなるほどにスポイルされた美しい王女 — a rough translation might be "The beautiful princess was helplessly spoiled," in the sense that the damage to her character done by spoiling her was irreparable. The line has nothing to do with responding to her.
確かな個を持ち — "She was very much her own person" or "She had a strong sense of individuality" or something along those lines.
"I notice something seems out of place, which brings me back to earth/clears my mind." Weird literal translation of 浮き足, and it gets the entire thing backwards on top of it.
"Forbidden for girls" is just really bad word choice here. It's supposed to be a joke about her having books that would considered improper for a girl (aka porn).
"I had never realized that such a soft, subdued voice could be so terrifying. It had much more impact than if she had yelled—and the tension in the air is palpable."
"We were just talking about how glad everyone is that the missing books were found on your bed this morning."
"I was afraid this would happen, but she had gone all day without saying anything about this morning, so I thought I was in the clear."
"Instead of thinking about how I
would go about it, I should think about how they would handle this in a mystery novel."
"It was a game I used to play when I didn't have anyone else. I had a lot of fun pretending to be my favorite characters, trying to emulate them as best I could."
"My grandfather always told me that people kept their secrets hidden under their beds, so you shouldn't go snooping around."
"A person's bed is one of their most personal places, and the last thing they want someone else digging through."
"I slowly/timidly/cautiously turn around, and there I see..."
"Rikka looks at my clenched hands, suspicion in her eyes."
"She grabs my hands. I look up at her." Not sure how this happened...
"I know what happened [ie. her becoming a suspect for the book thief] is still fresh on everyone's minds, and I'm sure that's part of it... but nobody talked to me in class today..." Really bad misinterpretation of what 昨日の今日 is doing.
"You're investigating the books' disappearance to help prove my innocence."
Rikka's reason for wanting to help Suoh isn't simply that she wants to prove her own innocence, but that she doesn't want to sit around and twiddle her thumbs while someone else
does all the work
for her
.
"everyone" is too vague. The library's always practically empty—she's wondering why there isn't even any
staff
there.
"I was hoping to find a common name between at least
some
of the missing books—if not all ten—but there isn't anyone who's checked out more than one."
She's
trying
to say that the person who "borrowed" the books did not follow standard procedure to do so.
Their faces were already close together. It's only the smile Suoh is reacting to.
"Huh? But there are ten books here." (In response to Suoh saying that technically only
nine
library books had gone missing.)
Mixes the two speakers up. This is particularly egregious because Suoh had already eliminated dusting for fingerprints as a possibility in an earlier scene.
"Despite saying it would help us narrow the list of suspects, we don't seem to have made any progress there..."
"I'm brought back to reality [by someone calling for her in a previous line] and the problems I was trying not to think about."
"But not having time to practice wasn't the real issue—the fact we were
having
a test at all had slipped my mind entirely."
"I'm so inflexible that even if I
had
practiced, I probably still would have failed."
"I
really
didn't want Mayuri to make fun of me."
It's Suoh who's nodding in response to the look Rikka's making.
"We both turn toward the source of the playful voice. [Mayuri] pops out from around the corner."
Should be "I shrink back/hesitate at her words" or something.
"It did sting a little though." -> "I was just teasing you/playing around."
"My nerves loosen, and a wave of relief comes over me."
"I feel the air clearing" is a misinterpretation of 体中から空気が抜ける気がした, which more literally translates to "It feels like all the air is leaving my body." If you wanted to keep the air imagery, you could compare it to an overfull balloon or something.
"You really are something else [in an "impressive" sense]. You weren't kidding around when you said you liked making sweets."
>I knew you wouldn't get it
"I'm joking. We could just ask if they would let us have some [flowers—as opposed to stealing them, which she suggested in a previous line]."
"I can hear Rikka calling out to me as I walk off, making my way to where
she
waits—as if I'm being drawn there."
For some reason, the translation refers to the Girl in the Wheelchair as "Wuthering Heights" here, and then "the Master of Wuthering Heights" a little bit later. I feel like it's trying to be some sort of clever localization to avoid calling her just plain "her," but it ends up being completely nonsensical.
This is, as I recall, a reference to the mystery's solution. I don't remember enough of the details to be 100% sure how to properly translate the line, though I'd probably go with something like:
"Three of the [nine genuine library] books fit the pattern, so she thought she'd test me to see if I could figure it out. I'm guessing it was just a coincidence that she decided to have some fun with."
"When I actually see the girl in-person, all the anger I had for her dissipates."
The point of this line is that the
student
doesn't belong. It has nothing to do with
where
Suoh finds her.
"Nearly overwhelmed, I shake my head."
"A game? I don't have time for that... I need you to come with me and tell everyone that Rikka is innocent."
Missing the detail about it being the top four books on the stack that are important. Just saying "four books" is meaningless.
